Weekly Market Update – 28th August 2015

Investment markets and key developments over the past week Share markets have gone from goodbye to good buy over the last week. The turmoil in global share markets continued into the past week, but signs of stabilisation and improvement gradually started to appear resulting in several share markets actually rising over the last week. Believe it or not, this started in Australian shares on Tuesday as buyers saw value around the 5000 mark on the ASX 200 and then continued as [...]

Weekly Market Update – 21st August 2015

Investment markets and key developments over the past week The global share market correction continued over the last week as worries intensified regarding emerging countries, their currency rout and the impact on global growth along with the ongoing fall in commodity prices. Even Greece and tensions between North and South Korea got a look in. Messy profit results also didn't help Australian shares. For the week, US shares fell 5.8%, Eurozone shares lost 6.7%, Japanese shares fell 5.3%, Australian shares fell [...]

Markets in free fall: How worried should you be?

Another terrible day on the ASX is unfolding  as tanking Chinese sharemarkets wipe out the past two years of gains (at 3.15pm (AEST) the S&P/ASX200 index was down 4 per cent cent to 5007, the biggest intraday drop since 2007). Is it a correction or something more serious? Whilst news headlines appear dominated by China, there are several themes that are driving the share market and will set the agenda for markets in coming weeks First the timing of the US [...]

Steins Law: Greece Succumbed Will we be next?

Greece … there has been a lot of noise, a lot of commentary and you have probably (for the most part) heard enough when it comes to Greece - we will keep it brief. Greek PM Tsipras has announced his resignation and the country is now headed for another election (September). While Greece and the Eurozone have agreed on a third bailout program the IMF is likely to insist that Greece’s debt burden is reduced before participating in the bailout with [...]

Is it just Yuan big storm in a teacup?

Earlier this month, without notice or explanation, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) lowered the yuan’s ‘daily fix’[1] by 1.9% against the U.S. dollar, the largest devaluation in 20 years. Investors responded by hitting the panic button. Investor’s feared that it signalled a sharper than expected slowdown in the world’s biggest economy. Apple shares dropped 5%, the Australian dollar nose dived and oil dipped to a six-year low. Financial analysts were blind sighted, was the PBOC’s intention to weaken the yuan [...]

Weekly Market Update – 14th August 2015

Investment markets and key developments over the past week The past week was volatile as investment markets reacted to China's move to devalue the renminbi and make its determination more market oriented. The associated uncertainty saw shares, commodities, emerging market currencies and the $A fall. It was a bit like investors thinking "we don't know what's happening so we better sell". Once the dust settled and investors came to the view that a large decline in the renminbi was unlikely, there [...]

Weekly Market Update – 31st July 2015

Investment markets and key developments over the past week Share markets had a mixed ride over the last week, not helped by renewed weakness in Chinese shares early in the week. However, this was offset to a greater or lesser degree depending on the market by good US earnings results, a benign US Federal Reserve and good data in Europe. While Chinese shares fell 10% over the week, Eurozone shares only lost 0.1% and Japanese shares rose 0.2%, US shares rose [...]
